Employment rights guide

Pay and the minimum wage

Minimum wage, payslips, deductions and accommodation.
All employment guides

Minimum wage

Workers must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage for every hour worked, including time on call at the workplace in some circumstances. Rates change each April — check gov.uk for current rates.

Accommodation

If your employer provides accommodation, only a limited daily amount (the "accommodation offset") can count towards minimum-wage pay. Providing a flat does not mean an imam can be paid less than the minimum wage.

Payslips and deductions

You are entitled to an itemised payslip. Your employer cannot make deductions from your pay unless the law allows it, your contract allows it, or you have agreed in writing in advance.

Gift Aid, donations and "honoraria"

Payments described as gifts or honoraria may still be wages if they are paid for work. Keep records of everything you receive.
